Irons: cavity back, blade, or hybrid set
Why most amateurs need game-improvement irons, and when to switch to player's irons.
Cavity back (game improvement)
Hollowed back redistributes weight to the perimeter, raising MOI and forgiveness on off-centre strikes. Default for HCP 12+.
Player's distance
Hybrid between forgiveness and control. Thinner top-line, faster face, still decent forgiveness. HCP 5–15.
Blade (muscle back)
For low HCP (<8) only — maximum feedback and workability, big penalties for mishits.
Hybrid set (combo)
Long irons (4–5) replaced with hybrids, mids/short are cavity back. Ideal for beginners and seniors.
Shaft: steel or graphite
Steel = more control, heavier. Graphite = lighter, more distance, less vibration. Beginners and ladies often graphite.
FAQ
How many irons do I need?
Standard: 5-PW or 4-PW (+AW). 14-club limit leaves room for wedges and putter.
Is forged better than cast?
Forged = softer feel, costlier to make. Cast = cheaper, more durable, near-identical performance.
